Introduction to the Colca Canyon
Colca Canyon: breathtaking views...
The Colca Canyon is the canyon of the Colca River in southeeastern Peru, about 160 km (100 mi) northwest of the big city of Arequipa. Scenic views expect the cruious adventure-seeking traveler who goes there!
Why the Colca Canyon?
It is fantastically beautiful and substantially larger than the notorious Grand Canyon in the United States. The Colca Canyon has a maximum depth of 4.160 m (HERE!). Though, much of the landscape is rather flat, when compared to the Grand Canyon.
The Colca Canyon is a popular hiking destination and except the beautiful views, it also has pre-Inca stepped terraces, small towns with original colonial architecture. The Colca Canyon is home to the Andean Condor endangered species. These fantastic birds are among the main attractions and icons of the Colca Canyon! One can see them fly by, as they fly across the canyon. They are especially frequent in the early morning and late afternoon.
Part of the Colca Canyon is green, another part is arid, semi desert-like with oases in it.
Activities in the Colca Canyon
What can you do in the Colca Canyon? Hiking, biking, white river rafting, photographing, some even try canoeing. Bird watching is also interesting, but not as popular as in Amazonian Peru's rainforests.
