MarasLocation: Rediscover Machu Picchu > The Sacred Valley > Maras -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Small Village, Interesting Nearby Attractions
Maras is northwest of the big city of Cuzco, but closest to Urubamba. The village is 3.028 m from sea level, 12 km (7.5 mi) from Urubamba.
The Sacred Valley's other towns/villages, Chinchero, Písac, Calca, Yucay, Urubamba are more interesting as towns and villages, but Maras has some particularly interesting attractions close to it.
The most interesting attraction of Maras is the colonial church erected by the Spaniards.
The Moray Circular Terraces
Moray immersed circular "andinas" are huge Inca agricultural terraces located near Maras. Very beautiful attraction, perhaps in the top 5, but certainly in the top 10 of attractions in this area of Peru. The location of Moray is 8 km (5 mi) west of Maras. A small road leads there. This subject is treated in details under the Moray section.
The Salinas (Salt Mine)
An interesting place where with the use of salt pools organized on
terraces, the locals extract salt through evaporation. The salt pools are 8 km (5 mi) north from Maras. The Vilcanota River is located just 1 km (0.6 mi) northwest from the site. Also, this subject is treated in details under the Salinas section.
Getting There
From Cuzco by road vehicle or from Urubamba or Yucay the same way. There is no rail and walking should be excluded, the distances are too big.
