The Town of Urubamba
This small town is one of the most visited ones in the "Valle Sagrado", near the village of Yucay.
Typical to this town are the old village buildings, some of which are decaying. The main roads often have colourful houses (like red and blue), somewhat differing from the mostly grey, brown and white traditional buildings.
There are less souvenir sellers in Urubamba than in Ollantaytambo, and Písac. Though, the town is renowned for its local pottery. A pottery maker is Pablo Seminario. His workshop is located at the corner of Zavala and Mariscal Castilla. Saminario is famous and visitors who want to buy genuine traditional pottery will look for his work.
Architecturally the town of Chinchero (Chincheros) is far more interesting, but due to its crossroad strategical location, Urubamba is receiving more tourists than it normally would. In other words, Urubamba is "in the way of tourists". The road that goes from Yucay to Ollantaytambo and the one that comes from Cuzco to Ollantaytambo meet here.
The town lacks major Inca attractions, but there are travel agents that offer hiking trips in the area.
If you are driving a road vehicle, then stopping over in this town for resting or buying food, drinks can be a good idea. It is at the crossroad (explained 2 paragraphs higher) between important towns, villages in the area.
Urubamba can also be a good starting point for those wanting to visit the Salinas salt mines and the Moray terraces.
Getting There
You can get to Urubamba by train and road vehicle. The Urubamba train station is located near the Hotel Libertador.
