Getting to Iquitos

Overview: Iquitos is the big city of northeastern Peru. It is located in the northeastern part of the Loreto Province. This is where the River Amazon is formed by the confluence of the rivers Ucayali and Marañón. Currently there are approximately 370.000 people living in Iquitos.

Longitude: 73° 14' W

By Air: Iquitos has its own airport called simply "Aeropuerto Iquitos" and has the IATA code IQT.

By Rail: There is no rail travel possibility to Iquitos.

By Road: Poor roads lead to Iquitos, but the Peruvian government is striving to built newer, wider roads to this city. Road travel to Iquitos is not recommended, as the poor roads are through dangerous jungle areas and towns where security is a serious problem. For foreign travelers, our advice is to fly by plane to Iquitos!

River Travel: Iquitos is a large port city on the huge Amazon and there are indeed river travel possibilities, including international routes to Colombia and Brazil.
