Getting to Machu Picchu
Overview: The ancient Inca ruins are Peru's and perhaps South America's most famous attractions. GPS Coordinates: Latitude: 13° 9' 23" S Longitude: 72° 32' 34" W By Air: Approachable through the airport of Cuzco, which also receives direct foreign landings. Most commonly, travelers arrive to Machu Picchu by flying to Lima, then from there they fly to Cuzco, then they take the train from Cuzco to Aguas Calientes - town, which has bus connection to Machu Picchu. Alternatively, travelers can engage in a 4 day trip after getting off at km 88 of the railway line when travelling from Cuzco in the Aguas Calientes direction. By Rail: From Cuzco to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo), from there either on foot or by bus (the latter section is very short). By Road: There is no possibility, unless you hike on the Inca Trail network, which starts near the railway line that runs between Cuzco and Aguas Calientes. Hikers who choose the longer Inca Trail hike, get off at the km 88 mark, in the proximity of Ollantaytambo and they continue the 4 day hike from there. Those who try the shorter route will get off at the km 104 mark of the train tracks, after that they will hike for 2 days only..
