The "Egg Hut" - a Peculiar Circular Inca Tambo
Runcuracay... a place where Inca Trail hikers stop over to take a rest
A circular building located near the Inca Trail leading to Machu Picchu is only visited by those who choose to hike to the ruins of Machu Picchu. The ruin is located several kilometers/miles away from the closest road, therefore it is inaccessible to those who don't approach it through the Inca Trail.
Runcuracay's location is near the pass with the same name, at an altitude of just under 4.000 m.
Other spellings of Runcuracay include: Runkurakay (Quechuan spelling) and Runkuracay (incorrect mix of Spanish and Quechuan). Pronunciation is identical.
This building must have been a post house or an Inca tambo. Most likely a tambo. A place where the chasquis messengers would stop over for food and rest for a while, until they could continue their trip onward.
The surrounding mountains are beautiful, especially at sunset or at dawn.
Later you can visit Machu Picchu's attractions. This site is not far from the magical ruins. Certainly, Runcuracay is just a small site, but due to its less usual round-shape it is peculiar.
Another interesting complex of ruins along the Machu Picchu Inca Trail that we recommend checking out it the one called Huinay Huayna (Wiñaywayna). |
